TRIP OVERVIEW

This 12 Day journey through Bhutan's Bumthang valley during the Jambay Lhakhang Drup festival is a truly special experience. The region is rich with history and spirituality, surrounded by beautiful mountain landscapes and ancient Buddhist sites. Buddhism first took root here as early as the 8th century, when the great Indian master Guru Rinpoche brought the teachings to this land. Your adventure begins the moment you land at Paro International Airport, where a traditional welcome greets you. You'll spend time exploring the historic Paro valley, then move on to Thimphu, the modern capital, with its lively mix of culture and everyday life. From there the trip takes you through the peaceful Phobjikha valley, Trongsa, and finally into Bumthang. Each place offers its own quiet beauty and sense of adventure, and with Adventure Planet Travels you will experience Bhutan in a thoughtful, personal way.

The heart of the journey is the Jambay Lhakhang Drup festival, held every year to celebrate the consecration of a temple built in the 7th century by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. Over five days, local people perform traditional mask dances that fill the temple grounds with energy and colour. On the first night a large bonfire known as Me Wang is lit, and people walk beneath the flames to receive a special blessing. The most powerful moment comes later with the sacred naked mask dance, performed around a roaring fire. Dancers wear only masks and move in a circle for several hours. Because of the deep spiritual meaning of this ritual, photography is strictly forbidden. Watching it feels like stepping into something ancient and pure, a rare glimpse of Bhutan's living culture and traditions.

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

ATTEND THE JAMBAY LHAKHANG DRUB FESTIVAL

One of the true highlights of this 12 Day cultural journey through Bhutan is the chance to witness the Jambay Lhakhang Drub festival in the sacred valley of Bumthang. Held each year at the ancient Jambay Lhakhang temple, this five day celebration marks the consecration of a shrine built in the seventh century by Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. Colourful mask dances, sacred rituals, and the powerful Me Wang fire blessing fill the temple grounds with energy and devotion. Standing among local families, monks, and villagers, you become part of the living tradition rather than just a spectator. The laughter, prayers, and shared moments create a warm, immersive experience that lets you feel the heart of Bhutanese culture up close. It is a rare and deeply moving chapter of the tour that stays with you long after the festival ends.

VISIT HISTORICAL MONUMENT SITES

Step into Bhutan's living history by walking through its magnificent dzongs, peaceful monasteries, and fascinating museums. These places feel warm and welcoming, not like dusty old relics. Inside the fortress-monasteries you'll find bright murals still telling ancient stories, carefully preserved sacred objects, and intricate woodwork carved by skilled hands generations ago. The museums add even more colour, displaying royal treasures, traditional crafts, and everyday items that show how Bhutanese people have always cherished what truly matters. Every visit feels personal and calm, as if you're quietly meeting the heart of a country that takes deep pride in its roots. Together these sites offer a gentle, memorable journey that reveals Bhutan's spiritual depth, artistic soul, and lasting commitment for preservation.

IMMERSIVE LOCAL EXPERIENCES

Go beyond ordinary sightseeing and truly dive into Bhutan's everyday culture. Sit beside skilled artisans and watch them keep traditional crafts alive with careful, patient hands. Stay in a local family's home where genuine hospitality wraps around you like a warm blanket. Join in simple rural chores, soak in the quiet healing of a traditional hot-stone bath, and feel the lively energy of archery contests that have brought communities together for generations. Dress in the elegant national gho or kira, share a heartfelt meal around the family table, and let these ordinary moments grow into lasting connections. Each experience peels back another layer of Bhutanese life, leaving you with real friendships, vivid memories, and a quiet respect for the traditions that still shape daily life high in the mountains.

PEOPLE AND CULTURE

What really stays with you after a trip to Bhutan isn't just the mountains or the temples, it's the people. From the moment you arrive, gentle smiles and quiet kindness greet you everywhere, a warmth rooted in Buddhist values of compassion and respect. In villages and small towns, life unfolds slowly: farmers care for their fields, families share simple meals, and communities gather for lively festivals full of colourful dances, music, and age-old rituals. Towering dzongs stand proud against the hills, prayer flags flutter in the breeze, and soft monastic chants drift through the air. Tradition and modern life sit side by side without fuss. Share a cup of butter tea with a local, watch a craftsperson at work, or simply chat, and you step into their world of farming, togetherness, and deep respect for nature. These moments create a real connection to Bhutan's living culture and the timeless Himalayan spirit that still guides its people.
