Once the visa is approved, an electronic visa clearance is issued, allowing travellers to board their flight to Bhutan. Adventure Planet Travels provides complete visa assistance, ensuring a seamless and hassle-free journey to Bhutan. GETTING INTO BHUTAN
Bhutan is easily accessible by air through Paro International Airport, the country's only international airport. Scheduled flights are operated by Bhutan's national carrier, Drukair, Royal Bhutan Airlines, and the private airline, Tashi Air, providing reliable connectivity with major regional destinations. Direct flights are available from Delhi, Kolkata, Bodh Gaya, Bagdogra, and Guwahati in India, as well as Kathmandu, Dhaka, Bangkok, Singapore, and Dubai. Flying into Bhutan offers travellers spectacular aerial views of the eastern Himalayas, including some of the world's highest peaks, before landing in the picturesque Paro Valley. Both airlines provide comfortable services and competitive fares, making air travel the most convenient and popular way to begin a Bhutan holiday.
Travellers can also enter Bhutan by land through the southern border town of Phuentsholing, the country's busiest overland gateway. The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal, India, located approximately 175 kilometres away, with a scenic drive of about three hours to the Bhutan border. This route is widely preferred by visitors seeking flexible travel arrangements or wishing to combine Bhutan with neighbouring destinations in India. After completing immigration formalities at Phuentsholing, visitors continue their journey through Bhutan's breathtaking mountain landscapes to reach the country's major destinations.
In addition to Phuentsholing, the border towns of Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar also serve as official overland entry and exit points. These gateways provide convenient access for travellers exploring eastern or southern Bhutan and are particularly suitable for combined Bhutan and India itineraries. Overland travel offers greater flexibility, can help reduce overall transportation costs, and allows visitors to experience diverse landscapes and cultures along the journey. Whether arriving by air or land, Bhutan provides a smooth and memorable gateway to one of the world's most unique and captivating travel destinations.

GOOD TO KNOW
GENERAL TRAVEL INFORMATION
SAFETY AND SECURITY
Bhutan is widely regarded as one of the safest travel destinations in the world, supported by its peaceful society and well-regulated tourism system. Throughout your journey, your local tour guide will be your primary source of assistance and will provide practical advice and recommendations whenever needed.
As with travel anywhere, we encourage you to take reasonable care of your personal belongings, both at your accommodation and while sightseeing. Avoid walking alone late at night, particularly in towns and cities. If you wish to enjoy Bhutan's nightlife, including bars or nightclubs, please consult your guide beforehand. They can recommend appropriate places and help ensure that your evening is safe and enjoyable.
TRAVEL INSURANCE
We strongly recommend obtaining suitable travel and health insurance from a provider in your home country before travelling to Bhutan. Travel and health insurance are not included in your tour cost and remain the traveller's personal responsibility.
Although insurance is not required to participate in Bhutan's tourism activities or access tourist facilities, comprehensive coverage can provide valuable protection against unexpected circumstances, including medical treatment, trip interruption, delays, or loss of personal belongings.
VACCINATION
Before travelling to Bhutan, we recommend consulting your doctor or a qualified travel health professional in your home country for appropriate medical advice. Depending on your individual circumstances and travel plans, your doctor may recommend certain vaccinations or preventive measures.
As a general precaution, travellers may consider being up to date with vaccinations such as typhoid, Hepatitis A, and tetanus.
WEATHER
Bhutan experiences four distinct seasons, each offering a different and memorable travel experience. Spring and autumn are generally considered ideal seasons for travel, with pleasant weather, clear mountain views, blooming landscapes, and a lively calendar of cultural festivals.
Summer brings rainfall, particularly in the southern and lower regions, but it also transforms the country into a landscape of lush green forests, vibrant valleys, and refreshing natural beauty. Winter is colder, especially at higher elevations, where temperatures can fall below freezing.
Bhutan can be visited throughout the year, with every season offering its own unique charm. Since weather conditions vary considerably across regions and seasons, travellers should pack appropriate clothing and prepare for changing temperatures. We recommend reviewing our packing checklist before departure.
ELECTRICITY
Electricity in Bhutan is generally reliable, particularly in the major towns and tourist areas. The standard supply is 220–240 volts, and both two-pin and three-pin round-hole power outlets are commonly used.
Bhutan's electricity is largely generated from clean and renewable hydropower, making the country's energy supply an important part of its commitment to environmental sustainability.
TOBACCO AND SMOKING
Bhutan has strict laws governing tobacco and smoking. The sale of tobacco products is prohibited, while travellers may be permitted to bring a limited quantity into the country subject to applicable customs regulations and duties.
Travellers carrying tobacco products must declare them at customs and comply with the prescribed limits and applicable duties. Smoking in public places is prohibited, so smokers should use designated smoking areas provided by hotels, restaurants, or other permitted establishments.
Always retain your customs receipt and comply with the current regulations throughout your stay. As tobacco regulations may change, travellers should confirm the latest requirements before travelling to Bhutan.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Bhutan offers exceptional opportunities for photography, from dramatic Himalayan landscapes and ancient architecture to rural communities, traditional festivals, wildlife, and everyday Bhutanese life. The country's monasteries, dzongs, temples, villages, and natural surroundings provide countless opportunities to capture memorable images.
Photography inside certain religious buildings and sacred areas may be restricted or prohibited. Always ask your local guide before taking photographs indoors, particularly inside shrines, temples, monasteries, dzongs, and other religious institutions.
When photographing local people, especially at close range, it is courteous to ask for their permission first. Your guide can assist with communication and help ensure that photography is conducted respectfully.
CURRENCY
The official currency of Bhutan is the Ngultrum (Nu), which is equivalent in value to the Indian Rupee. Travellers are encouraged to carry some cash in Ngultrum for everyday purchases, particularly when visiting local shops, markets, restaurants, and smaller establishments.
Major hotels, shops, and businesses in popular tourist areas may accept international credit cards, although acceptance can vary. Carrying some US Dollars in cash can also be convenient for currency exchange or personal expenses.
Currency can be exchanged at banks and authorised exchange facilities. Your tour guide can assist you with exchanging money during your trip if required.
Indian Rupees are also widely accepted in Bhutan, although certain denominations may be subject to restrictions. Travellers entering Bhutan through India may therefore find it convenient to carry eligible Indian currency for use during their stay.
SHOPPING
Bhutan is an excellent destination for travellers interested in traditional crafts, textiles, and locally made souvenirs. Shopping offers an opportunity to take home a meaningful piece of Bhutanese culture and craftsmanship.
Popular items include handwoven textiles, silk and traditional fabrics, carved wooden products, traditional masks, cane and bamboo baskets, wooden bowls known as dapas, handmade paper, silver religious figures, traditional thangka paintings, and Bhutanese postage stamps.
Handicraft shops and local markets can be found in Thimphu and other major towns. When purchasing cultural or antique-looking objects, travellers should ensure that the items are legally permitted for export. The buying and selling of genuine antiques is prohibited in Bhutan.
TIPPING CULTURE
Tipping in Bhutan is entirely voluntary and remains a personal choice. However, if you are satisfied with the service you receive, a tip is a thoughtful way to express your appreciation.
Tips may be given to guides, drivers, hotel staff, trekking teams, and other service providers who contribute to making your journey comfortable and memorable. There is no fixed amount or mandatory tipping standard; the amount is entirely at your discretion and should reflect your satisfaction and gratitude.

Approval of any refund is not guaranteed and will be assessed on a case by case basis.
FLIGHT TICKET REFUND
Where international or domestic flight tickets have been issued and subsequently cancelled, refunds shall be governed by the fare conditions and cancellation policies of the respective airline. In most cases, airlines refund only the applicable government taxes or refundable fare components. Any airline refund is subject to the airline's approval and may require supporting documentation to substantiate the cancellation request.
TOUR POSTPONEMENT
Requests to postpone or reschedule a confirmed tour will be considered on a case by case basis and remain subject to the availability and policies of hotels, airlines, government authorities, and other service providers. Any additional costs arising from changes to travel dates, accommodation, transportation, visa processing, or other travel arrangements shall be borne by the traveller.
