TRIP OVERVIEW

Explore western Bhutan on two wheels with a six-day motorcycle journey through mountain roads, quiet valleys and traditional villages. Starting in Paro, the ride takes you to Thimphu and then deeper into the mountains towards Phobjikha. Along the way, you will ride through pine forests, open countryside and winding roads that connect Bhutan's valleys. From Phobjikha, the route continues back towards Thimphu through Punakha, giving you the chance to experience a different side of the landscape. The final stretch takes you from Thimphu to Paro through Haa Valley and over Chele La, where the road climbs into the high mountains before descending towards Paro. The changing scenery and road conditions make every section of the journey feel different.

This tour is not only about reaching the next destination. It is about enjoying the road and experiencing Bhutan at your own pace. Stop for a cup of tea in a roadside village, take photographs of the mountains, chat with local people or simply pull over and enjoy the silence. You will pass traditional farmhouses, terraced fields, Buddhist monasteries and historic dzongs as you make your way through the valleys. There are long open stretches where you can settle into the ride and tighter mountain bends that keep you focused. For riders who want to experience Bhutan beyond the usual sightseeing route, this journey offers a simple and rewarding way to see the country; one road, one valley and one mountain pass at a time.

DETAIL ITINERARY

DAY 01: ARRIVAL PARO | SIGHTSEEING | THIMPHU

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your tour guide and begin your Bhutan adventure with a short drive to Ringpung Dzong. Perched above the Paro Valley, this impressive fortress-monastery offers a wonderful introduction to Bhutan's rich culture, history, and traditional architecture. From here, continue to the peaceful Kyichu Temple, one of Bhutan's oldest and most sacred temples. Take some time to admire its beautiful surroundings and experience the quiet spiritual atmosphere. After lunch at a local restaurant, meet your road captain for a detailed motorbike briefing. You will learn about Bhutan's traffic rules, the riding plan, safety guidelines, and important riding signals. Once the briefing is complete, you will have the opportunity to check your motorbike and make sure everything is in good working condition before setting off.

Your first ride begins with a relaxed test ride toward Drugyel Dzong, giving you a chance to get comfortable with your bike and experience Bhutan's roads for the first time. As you ride through the beautiful Paro Valley, enjoy the fresh mountain air, peaceful villages, and stunning Himalayan scenery along the way. After the test ride, continue your journey toward Thimphu, Bhutan's vibrant capital city, where you will spend the night. In the evening, take a leisurely walk around downtown Thimphu, explore its lively streets, and enjoy the local atmosphere at your own pace. It is a gentle and memorable start to your motorbike journey through Bhutan.

DAY 02: THIMPHU SIGHTSEEING | PHOBJIKHA

After breakfast at the hotel, visit Buddha Point at Kuenselphodrang, which offers a commanding view of northern and southern Thimphu. Then, visit the Painting School to see the 13 traditional arts and crafts and watch young students demonstrate their skills. After the visit, begin your day's ride toward the beautiful Phobjikha Valley. Enjoy the ride along the East-West National Highway, with short stopover breaks along the way. At Dochula, take a brief stop to explore the 108 Druk Wangyel Stupas before continuing downhill on winding roads toward the lower valley of Lobesa.

Stop for lunch at a local restaurant in Lobesa before continuing your ride through deep forested landscapes toward Phobjikha Valley. The route takes you through peaceful surroundings and winding roads as you gradually make your way up to the valley. Upon arrival in Phobjikha, take some time to relax and enjoy the beautiful landscape around you. In the evening, take a leisurely walk in and around the valley, enjoying its quiet atmosphere and scenic surroundings. This ride combines visits to important cultural sites in Thimphu with a scenic journey through mountain roads, forests, and valleys before reaching Phobjikha, one of the most beautiful valleys in Bhutan.

DAY 03: PHOBJIKHA SIGHTSEEING | PUNAKHA | THIMPHU

In Phobjikha, visit the ancient Gangtey Monastery, perched on a hilltop overlooking the wide-open valley below. Explore its inner sanctum before beginning your ride to Thimphu via Punakha, the erstwhile capital of Bhutan. The well-maintained, blacktopped national highway winds through rural valleys and thick forests, offering a scenic ride through the countryside. In Punakha, visit the impressive Punakha Dzong and explore the main inner sanctum accessible to visitors. Spend some time in the main courtyard photographing the architecture and interacting with young monks.

After exploring the dzong, take a short ride to Kabesa Valley via Hebesa and Sirigang communities. From the viewpoint at Kabesa, enjoy sweeping aerial views of Khamsum Yueley, Sirigang, Hebesa, and Balue valleys. Continue your return ride to Lobesa via Punakha and stop for a gourmet lunch at a local restaurant. If time permits and you wish to continue exploring, take a short hike to the famed Chimi Lhakhang, locally known as the Temple of Fertility. On completion, ride straight to Thimphu for your night halt.

DAY 04: RIDE TO HAA | PARO

Following breakfast at the hotel, start your ride to Paro via the beautiful Haa Valley and Chele La Mountain Pass. The ride begins along the national highway through the scenic rural settings of southern Thimphu, cruising on fairly straight roads with occasional bends until you reach the Chuzom River confluence. From Chuzom, turn left and follow the high road toward Haa. Make a brief stop at Dobji Viewpoint to enjoy the scenic surroundings before continuing the two-and-a-half-hour ride through the rural valleys of Dawakha, Javana, and Bitekha, before descending toward Susuna and Haa Valley.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Haa, followed by a visit to Lhakhang, the main place of worship for the people of Haa. After the visit, continue your ride up the steep slopes of Chele La for about 45 minutes. At the pass, spend half an hour exploring the area and photographing the distant mountains and valleys. Then, enjoy an hour-long downhill ride as you make your way into Paro Valley. Upon arrival, check in at the hotel and spend the remainder of the day at leisure, exploring downtown Paro.

DAY 05: TIGER NEST HIKE | PARO

Today, you will visit the famous Tiger's Nest Monastery, also known as Taktshang, located high on a cliff above Paro Valley. The day begins with a peaceful hike through pine forests, where you can enjoy the fresh mountain air and take photographs along the way. There will be many chances to capture the beautiful forest, prayer flags, mountain views, local scenery, and occasional views of the monastery through the trees. After about two hours of hiking, you will reach the viewpoint café, where you can take a well-earned break with a cup of tea or coffee. The viewpoint also offers one of the best views of Tiger's Nest, so take some time to enjoy the scenery and capture photographs from different angles before continuing the hike.

From the viewpoint, it takes around 50 minutes to reach the monastery. Spend some time exploring this special place and learning about its history, legends, and importance to Bhutanese Buddhism. Photography is not allowed inside the temple, giving you a chance to put your camera away and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. After the visit, walk down to the cafeteria for lunch before continuing the descent to the valley. Your private vehicle will take you back to the hotel for some rest. In the evening, visit a local farmhouse to experience a traditional hot stone bath, watch or join an archery session, and enjoy a simple Bhutanese dinner while photographing local life and culture.
