Leave Thimphu early and begin your journey towards the peaceful Phobjikha Valley. The drive takes you through some of Bhutan's most beautiful mountain scenery, with forest-covered hills, winding roads, and changing landscapes along the way. Your first major stop is Dochula Pass, sitting at 3,150 metres above sea level. Take a moment to breathe in the crisp mountain air, walk among the colourful prayer flags, and admire the 108 Druk Wangyel chortens. On a clear day, the views of the distant snow-covered Himalayan peaks are unforgettable. From Dochula, the road descends through thick forests towards the warmer Punakha region. In Lobesa, enjoy a short village walk through traditional houses and farm fields before reaching Chimi Lhakhang, the well-known hilltop temple connected with Drukpa Kunley, Bhutan's much-loved "Divine Madman."
After lunch, continue the drive towards Phobjikha, passing through quiet villages, open farmland, and peaceful mountain landscapes. As you climb higher, the valley slowly opens up, revealing wide green meadows surrounded by wooded hills. Phobjikha is especially famous for the rare black-necked cranes that arrive here each winter after travelling from the Tibetan Plateau. Their return is an important part of local life, and the valley remains carefully protected to preserve its natural beauty and peaceful character. Once you arrive, check into a traditional farmhouse and take some time to explore the nearby paths. Enjoy the fresh air, open views, and simple rhythm of village life as the evening settles over the valley.
