DETAIL ITINERARY

DAY 01: ARRIVAL PARO | SIGHTSEEING | THIMPHU

On arrival at Paro International Airport, your private guide and driver will meet you and welcome you to Bhutan. From the airport, begin your cultural journey through the historic Paro Valley with a visit to Rinpung Dzong, one of Bhutan's finest examples of traditional fortress architecture. Explore the dzong's courtyards, temples, and richly decorated wooden galleries while your guide introduces you to its history and religious significance. Rinpung Dzong dates to the 17th century and remains both a religious and administrative centre of Paro. After the visit, continue to Paro town for lunch at a local restaurant, where you can enjoy a selection of Bhutanese dishes.

After lunch, drive to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples, that dates back to the 7th century. Take time to walk around the temple courtyard, observe the prayer wheels, and visit the sacred shrines dedicated to Jow Shakyamuni. Continue north through the valley to the Drukgyel Dzong viewpoint, where the historic fortress stands against the mountain landscape and, on a clear day, offers views towards Mount Jomolhari. From here, begin the scenic drive to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital, arriving in the evening for your overnight stay.

DAY 02: TRANS BHUTAN TRAIL HIKE | THIMPHU

Start: Upper Motithang | Finish: Buddha Point, Kuenselphodrang | Distance: 18 km | Walking Time: 6–7 hours | Elevation Gain: 1,250 m | Highest Elevation: 3,994 m | Difficulty: Moderate – Difficult

Today you will venture on a must-experience hike through a section of the Trans Bhutan Trail in Thimphu. The hike begins at Upper Motithang, above the Takin Preserve, where the trail climbs steadily through blue pine, oak, and rhododendron forest. The route takes you towards Phajoding, following a traditional mountain path that becomes quieter and more rugged as you gain altitude. Along the way, you pass prayer flags, forest clearings, and sections of the trail used by horse caravans. At Phajoding, take time to explore the monastery area and pause for views across Thimphu Valley. The climb is demanding, particularly as the air thins at higher elevations, so a steady pace and regular water breaks are important.

From Phajoding, continue towards Pumola, where the landscape opens into alpine meadows and higher ridgelines. This section of trail offers changing views of Thimphu and the surrounding mountains before beginning the long descent towards Kuenselphodrang from the highest pass, at 3,994 metres. The descending section between Pumola and the highest pass can be harder on the knees, making trekking poles useful. As the trail descends, the landscape gradually changes from alpine terrain to forest and lower-elevation surroundings. The final approach leads to Kuenselphodrang, where the Buddha Dordenma statue stands above Thimphu Valley. This section provides a satisfying finish to the hike, with expansive views over the capital and surrounding mountains.

DAY 03: LUNGCHUTSE HIKE | PUNAKHA

Start: Dochula Pass | Finish: Dochula Pass | Distance: 6 km | Walking Time: 3–4 hours | Elevation Gain: 450 m | Highest Elevation: 3,550 m | Difficulty: Easy – Moderate

Start your morning in Thimphu with a visit to Kuenselphodrang, where the Buddha Dordenma overlooks the city from the hillside. Take a little time here to enjoy the quiet surroundings and the changing view of Thimphu below before continuing to the National Institute of Zorig Chusum, Bhutan's traditional arts school. Walk through the classrooms and see young artists working on intricate paintings, woodcarving, embroidery, and other traditional crafts. From Thimphu, the road climbs steadily towards Dochula Pass. After a short break at the pass, begin the hike to Lungchutse through a forest of rhododendrons, firs, and other Himalayan trees. The trail gradually gains height, giving you a chance to slow down, breathe in the mountain air, and enjoy the forest rather than simply passing through it. As you reach the higher sections, the trees begin to open and the views stretch across the surrounding mountains and valleys.

After spending some time at Lungchutse, retrace the trail to Dochula and continue the drive towards Punakha. The journey feels noticeably different as the road descends from the cool mountain slopes into the warmer valley. Along the way, you will see the landscape change from dense forest to terraced fields, farmhouses, and scattered settlements. Arrive in Punakha by late afternoon or evening and settle into your accommodation. The rest of the evening is yours to relax after the hike, enjoy the quieter pace of the valley, and prepare for the next day's experiences in Punakha.

DAY 04: KABJI HOKOTSHO HIKE | PUNAKHA

Start: Kabesa | Finish: Kabesa | Distance: 9 km | Walking Time: 5–6 hours | Elevation Gain: 300 m | Highest Elevation: 2,000 m | Difficulty: Moderate

A day hike to Kabji Hoko Tsho offers a quieter side of Punakha, away from the valley's better-known landmarks. The journey begins near Chorten Nyingpo, after a drive through the rural landscapes of Kabesa. From the trailhead, the path gradually leaves the settled areas and enters forest, following sections of an irrigation channel and natural ridges. The walk takes around two hours one way at an average pace, with the route passing through changing vegetation and occasional open sections overlooking the surrounding hills and farmland.

The destination is Kabji Hoko Tsho, a peaceful lake tucked into thick forest at around 2,000 metres. Its name refers to the local belief that the lake has an opening that allows water to drain away, preventing it from overflowing. Spend time beside the lake, listen to the forest, and take in the stillness before beginning the return walk. Spring and autumn offer comfortable conditions for the hike, while the trail can become slippery and leech-prone during the wetter summer months. For travellers who want more than a quick sightseeing stop, this hike combines a village setting, forest walking and local stories into a rewarding day in Punakha.

DAY 05: PUNAKHA SIGHTSEEING | PARO

Begin the morning with a visit to Punakha Dzong, an impressive fortress-monastery set at the meeting point of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers. Walk through its richly decorated courtyards, traditional wooden galleries, and sacred temples while learning about Punakha's important role in Bhutanese history. Continue to Yebesa Village for the hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. The trail winds through rice terraces, small farmhouses, and pine-covered slopes before reaching the four-storey chorten. From the top, take in wide views of the Mo Chhu Valley and surrounding farmland.

Return to Punakha for lunch at a local restaurant, where you can enjoy freshly prepared Bhutanese dishes, including red rice, seasonal vegetables, and ema datshi. After lunch, begin the drive to Paro, travelling through mountain landscapes and traditional villages. The route passes through the Dochula area, offering changing views as you descend towards the Paro Valley. On arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening. This overnight stay in Paro prepares you for the following day's exploration of the valley and its cultural landmarks.

DAY 06: TIGER NEST HIKE | PARO

Following breakfast in the hotel, drive to the Tiger's Nest trailhead in Paro and set off on foot through the blue-pine forest. The trail climbs steadily, with prayer flags and occasional views across the valley. Take a short refreshment break along the way to recharge before continuing towards the Taktshang Cafeteria. At the viewpoint, pause for lunch and enjoy the clear view of Tiger's Nest Monastery across the gorge. After lunch, continue along the trail, descending a series of stone steps into the gorge before crossing the waterfall and climbing back up to the monastery. Spend time exploring the sacred temple complex before beginning the descent. The full hike generally takes several hours, depending on pace and time spent at the monastery.

After returning from the hike, the day shifts from mountain walking to hands-on Bhutanese experiences. Try your hand at traditional archery, Bhutan's national sport, with guidance on how to handle the bow and take aim at the target. Later, unwind with a traditional hot stone bath, where heated river stones warm the water in a wooden tub. In the evening, visit a local farmhouse for a home-cooked Bhutanese dinner. Expect simple, hearty dishes such as red rice, seasonal vegetables and ema datshi, served in a relaxed family setting. This combination of hiking, local activities, bathing and farmhouse dining gives you a fuller experience of Paro beyond its well-known sights.

DAY 07: AIRPORT DROP | BON VOYAGE

After a timely breakfast in the hotel, you will be driven to Paro International Airport to board your flight to your onward destination. Your guide and driver will bid you farewell.
