After an early breakfast, set out towards the northern part of Punakha Valley for a day of birdwatching around Rimchu and Shatem, within the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Park. The journey itself is part of the experience, with the route passing through open fields, quiet villages, forested slopes, and along the banks of the Mo Chhu River. Take your time exploring different habitats, as each area can offer something different. The riverbanks are particularly good for watching water-loving birds, while the surrounding woodland and farmland attract a variety of smaller forest species. Keep an eye out for Ruddy Shelduck, River Lapwing, Common Kingfisher, Common Merganser, Common Hoopoe, Siberian Stonechat, Ibisbill, Northern Pintail, Eurasian Wigeon, Mallard, and Bar-headed Goose.
As you continue through the area, the birdlife gradually changes with the landscape and season. Some species are resident throughout the year, while others may be seen during their seasonal movements. The forest edges and open areas can be productive for species such as Common Buzzard, Brown Dipper, Oriental Magpie Robin, Long-tailed Shrike, Grey-backed Shrike, Grey Wagtail, Grey Treepie, Rufous Sibia, Striated Prinia, Long-tailed Minivet, Dark-sided Flycatcher, White-throated Laughingthrush, Great Barbet, and Black-throated Sunbird. The pace of the day remains relaxed, allowing plenty of time to listen for calls, scan the trees and river, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings while looking for these birds.
